The article examines historical development of scientific ideas about the system of carflow organization on the railway network since the moment of its appearance and establishment and enumerates main stages and aspects of technological and economic character, which have determined development and influenced establishment of scientific fundamentals as for distribution of marshalling yards on the railway network. The role of eminent scientists and research & designing institutions has been shown in development of ideas as regards establishment of the carflow organization system, train make-up configurations and distribution of marshalling yards within the railway network.
